Waste Not, Want Not
Happy Trash Can is a local composting business that provides curbside compost pick up in Bozeman, Belgrade, and Livingston. Husband-and-wife team Ryan Green and Adrienne Huckabone are the passion behind the company; they are knowledgeable, exuberant, and dedicated to their mission of diverting food waste from landfills and creating a quality product that gives back by increasing the soil health in the area.
“Composting is really low-hanging fruit for communities to address climate change,” Green says. “Providing a local fertility source takes away the reliance on transporting nitrogen fertilizers or compost from out of state.”
Walking the Walk: Montana Ale Works
Kurnick’s work includes coordinating with Jordan to figure out a solar installation, which she said will cover the south and north faces of the Ale Works roof. The restaurant is also expanding its composting. The large trash can by the dish area is going to be replaced by compost bins, Jordan said, because they learned their composter, Happy Trash Can out of Belgrade, can now take post-consumer waste as well as scraps from the prep table. The move is expected to divert thousands of pounds of food a week from the landfill

Community Cornerstone
Over the years, the Co-op has evolved with the Bozeman community. It has increased the size of its main store, added an off-site bakery, opened a new store downtown, and bolstered its relationships and programs that impact the community. For example, the Co-op donates 10 cents from the sale of every apple to a diff erent local nonprofi t each month through the Apple- a-Day program, raising $25,000 in 2020 alone. The Co-op also works with Happy Trash Can, a residential and commercial composting service. Since 2016 they have diverted 250,000 gallons of kitchen and consumer waste away from the landfill and into compost for local gardeners and farmers.
